The Melbourne Benevolent Asylum: Haven of Rest

In March 1911, the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum relocated from North Melbourne to a new purpose built facility on the outskirts of Cheltenham. Over 1,700 inmates were subsequently buried in the Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery between 1911 and 1976, the vast majority in unadorned graves. For those who found a haven of rest at the Asylum, they are worth remembering...

Written by Travis M. Sellers, The Melbourne Benevolent Asylum: Haven of Rest is the fourth book in the Remembering Them series published by the Friends of Cheltenham and Regional Cemeteries Inc. The A5-sized book comprises 208 pages of genealogical information, including maiden and married names, occupation, year of arrival, country of origin, date and reason of admission, burial date and location, officiating minister, headstone inscription and other persons buried in the same grave. The book foreword is written by Linley Hooper, FGSV of The Genealogical Society of Victoria Inc.
